(xxi) Unbewußte Orte (Unconscious Places), exh. cat., Bern, Kunsthalle Bern, 1987 (illustrated, p. 47)

This is a unique collection of twenty three photographs from the series of Unbewußte Orte (Unconscious Places) by Thomas Struth is the most important one remaining in private hands. They were all bought at the inaugural exhibition of the Galerie Meert Rihoux (renamed later Galerie Greta Meert) in Brussels 1988.

Initially part of a commission for the German Ruhr region (the first industrial area in Western Europe), they were first exhibited at the Folkwang Museum in Essen in 1987 under the direction of Ute Eskildsen.

Unbewußte Orte (Unconscious Places) is a series that Thomas Struth developed at the beginning of his artistic career in the 1970s and 1980s by first photographing his city of Düsseldorf and then expanding to other cities in Germany, Europe and the United States. Its purpose being through photography to identify places that synthesize each city. Taken most of the time emptied of its inhabitants, they give the viewer a reflection on urban space and "questioning the structures and realities of dictatorship, capitalism and communism" (Thomas Struth: Photographs 1978-2010).

This series is the first to showcase Thomas Struth's work on the international art scene. The exhibition Unbewußte Orte (Unconscious Places), first shown at the Kunsthalle in Bern in 1987, was his first major museum exhibition to travel throughout Europe and Japan.
