Description

VENETO-CRETAN SCHOOL, LATE 16TH CENTURY

The Adoration of the Magi

oil on pine panel, unframed

49.5 x 38.5 cm.; 19½ x 15⅛ in.

Condition Report

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. There are visible faint, small surface cracks scattered throughout, as well as some repaired damages with associated retouching in the lower half of the central king, and in the architecture above him. None of these impede the legibility of the image. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as small spot retouching scattered throughout, and more concentrated areas of retouching in the upper left margin to some surface cracking, as well as in the lower right margin and lower left corner to what appear to be old damages. In overall moderate condition.
