Property from a Spanish Private Collection
SPANISH SCHOOL, FIRST HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY
Saint Anthony visiting Saint Paul the hermit
oil on canvas
209 x 156 cm.; 82¼ x 61⅜ in.
The canvas has an old lining and the paint surface, whilst stable, is extremely dirty with a thick and uneven, discoloured (and in patches oxidised) varnish. There is a supportive square of canvas adhered to the reverse behind the head of the kneeling Saint. There are some broadly applied retouchings and strengthening that have discoloured and are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms this scattering of broad and badly applied retouchings - possibly applied over the old varnish - the most significant patch of which is to the left of the saints head, at the left margin - perhaps related to an old tear - and to the Saints high hand fingers clasped around his staff. A canvas seam, visible in raking light, runs vertically, just off centre to the left, through the length of the painting.
In seemingly excellent, relatively un disturbed original condition beneath the old varnish.
Offered in a new carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
