The Property of a Gentleman
PIER FRANCESCO DI JACOPO FOSCHI
Florence 1502 - 1567
Portrait of a lady, possibly Vittoria Colonna
oil on pine panel, unframed
82 x 65.3 cm.; 32¼ x 25¾ in.
The panel is uncradled, flat and stable, and shows evidence of two previous horizontal battens along the upper and lower margins. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish slightly discoloured and uneven. There is evidence of some frame abrasion along the edges. There are visible discoloured retouchings scattered throughout, most notably in the background and in her black dress. Inspection under ultraviolet confirms these, and reveals further retouchings scattered in her veil and face, and more concentrated areas in her hands, in the edge of her veil on the left-hand side of her head, to an old horizontal damage just above her proper right arm approx. 20cm. long, and in her shoulder (centre left). In overall fair moderate condition.
