Description

NORTH ITALIAN SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY

The Mocking of Christ

oil on canvas

134.2 x 112.5 cm.; 52⅞ x 44½ in.

Condition Report

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively dirty, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The paint surface has thinned slightly in areas, revealing the dark ground beneath. There are three vertical crease marks visible under raking light: one 5cm. from the right margin, which runs the height of the canvas; one runs through the profile of the soldier on the right approx. 20cm. long; and one which runs through the head of the soldier on the left approx 28cm. long. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings to some repaired damages: in Christ's cloak just to the right of the knot approx. 10 x 2cm.; through the left side of His hair and beard approx 30 x 1.5cm.; in the sky above and to the right of His head approx. 15 x 1cm.; in the sky starting along the centre of the upper margin approx. 8 x 2.5cm.; in the upper right corner approx. 4 x 15cm.; in His proper right arm approx. 5 x 1.5cm.; to the right of His cloak, lower right, approx. 10 x 1.5cm.; and an L-shape lower right approx 5 x 10cm. There are further scattered retouchings. None of these impede the legibility of the image. In overall moderate condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
