FOLLOWER OF FRANS POURBUS THE YOUNGER
Bust-length portrait of a young lady
inscribed upper right: .1584. ÆTA 14.
oil on oak panel
48.8 x 40.6 cm.; 19¼ x 16 in.
The panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish discoloured. There are three surface splits - 2 of which start at the upper margin, the longest approx. 16cm., and one starting at the lower margin - these all have associated retouching. A further vertical surface split with retouching is visible in the far left side of her hair, approx. 15cm. There appears to have been past flaking, and there are associated retouchings and tiny losses in the background centre left. More areas of past flaking are visible under raking light - these are all stable. There is a small scuff mark less then 0.5cm. in diameter in her chest lower right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a very thick varnish underneath which two campaigns of retouching are visible. The first is more recent and consists of small retouchings along the splits upper left, in the aforementioned scuff lower right, and 2 small spots along the right side of the upper margin, and a line along the top of the right margin. There is also strengthening to 2 of the letters of the inscription upper right. The second, older campaign is less apparent, but seems to consist of retouchings scattered in the background, as well as spot retouching scattered in her face and ruff, and larger areas in her chin and to the left of her mouth, each approx. 2 x 2cm. The retouching in the background is more apparent to the visible eye. In overall fairly good condition. Offered in a wooden frame with a marbled effect.
