Condition Report

Both thick panels are cradled with horizontal battens and have horse hair adhered to the reverses, and are both slightly bowed. The paint surfaces of both are dirty, with evidence of old woodworm, and the varnishes are somewhat discoloured.

The former: as well as the evidence of previous woodworm, there are losses in the paint surface upper left, lower right, and in the halo above Joachim's head caused by flaking. There are visible areas of retouching in the painted surround, the sky, along the right margin, and in the lower right corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and reveals in addition retouching around the edge of Joachim's cloak, in his sleeve, and outstretched robe.

The latter: as well as the evidence of previous woodworm, there are losses in the paint surface in the green cloak of Saint Remy. Discoloured retouchings are visible in the painted surround, in the gold of Saint Remy's halo, and along the right and lower margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and furthermore reveals vertical lines of retouchings to the joins in the panel either side of the centre, running from the lower margin approx. half way up the panel. Other small, scattered retouchings are in the headdress of the female figure (left), and in Saint Remy's chin.

The panels are in overall fair condition.
