CIRCLE OF PIETER POURBUS
Portrait of a lady
oil on oak panel
33.7 x 26.3 cm.; 13¼ x 10 3.8 in.
The bevelled panel is uncradled, very slightly bowed, and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. The network of craquelure has become more pronounced in her flesh tones. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick, milky varnish underneath which some retouching is visible: small spots scattered in the background, her cuff, her hands, and the letter she holds, and more sparse spots in her dress. There are three more notable areas of retouching: directly to the right of her nose, in the right side of her neck, and the largest in the right side of her face approx. 4 x 1.5cm. Offered in a chequered parcel-gilt frame in good condition.
