Property from a Private Collection
BOLOGNESE SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY
Saint Jerome in the wilderness
oil on canvas, unframed
211.9 x 120.7 cm.; 83⅜ x 47½ in.
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discolored. There is evidence of slight wear throughout. There is a vertical crease which runs the height of the canvas one third of the way from the right margin. Three repaired horizontal tears are visible: one just above Jerome’s head which runs the width of the canvas; the second runs across his chest which also runs the width of the canvas; and the third across his thighs measuring approx 77cm. There are further smaller repaired tears scattered in and around his proper left leg. All of these have associated visible retouching. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick and streaky varnish, underneath which the aforementioned retouchings are confirmed, as well as further smaller, scattered retouchings, for example in his arms and side. In overall moderate condition.
