CIRCLE OF LUDOVICO CARRACCI
FATE DECIDING HER DESTINY
oil on canvas
canvas: 23¾ by 17⅞ in.; 60.3 by 45.5 cm.
framed: 28½ by 22½ in.; 72.4 by 57.2 cm.
The canvas is lined. An elegant scene reads well with some details preserved, though certain areas on the paint surface like the interior of the chimney have thinned. Craquelure visible throughout. Miniature dots of loss that are barely visible are on the lighter tones, like a dot at center on the ledge of the chimney and on the vertical white wall that runs on the center, 6 in. from the top edge. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish under which scattered thin lines of strengthening to address the craquelure fluoresce on the bottom left quadrant, on the shirt of the figure at left, and the background. Small dots of retouching are here and there on the lady's face like her top lip. Offered in an ebonized wood frame with a gold inner-liner.
