CIRCLE OF CLAUDE-JOSEPH VERNET
VIEW OF THE WATERFALLS AT TIVOLI WITH FISHER FOLK, THE VILLA OF MAECENAS BEYOND
oil on canvas
canvas: 42½ by 64½ in.; 108 by 164 cm.
framed: 49 by 72 in.; 124.5 by 182.9 cm.
Canvas is lined. A beautiful image reads well, though there is some minor thinness to the darker colors like on the rocks at right and leaves on the trees on the left quadrant. Retouches are visible on the aforementioned loss of paint. Inspection under UV reveals further spots of retouching scattered on the ground, and a few finely applied lines with small spots scattered on the sky. What appear to be three repairs fluoresce, one next to the standing figure on the ground, the other on the bottom right quadrant, right at center on the rocks, and lastly one at the top of the rock formation at right. Offered in a giltwood frame.
