RINALDO AND ARMIDA

oil on canvas, unframed

canvas: 48¼ by 35⅞ in.; 122.6 by 91.1 cm.

The subject of this painting derives from Jerusalem Delivered, an epic poem completed in 1582 by the late Italian Renaissance poet, Torquato Tasso. Although the characters are fictional, the story takes place during First Crusade of the Romans to Jerusalem. Rinaldo, a handsome and fierce Christian warrior is stopped by the pagan Armida, who falls in love with him and keeps him as a lovesick prisoner. With the help of his fellow crusaders who find him and hold a mirror to his face, Rinaldo starts remembering who he is and eventually returns to his Christian duties.

This painting depicts the moment when Armida comes across the sleeping Rinaldo, whom she intended to kill, but instead falls in love with. Cupid, who firmly grabs Armida's arm with the knife, keeps her from completing the duty and represents the infatuation she starts to develop for Rinaldo.
