BALTASAR DE VARGAS FIGUEROA | HOLY FAMILY

Like most colonial painters, Baltasar de Vargas Figueroa used European engravings as inspiration for his paintings. There are about 180 works attributed to him, and they consist mostly of religious subjects, though a few portraits have been recorded.

Professor Fernando Restrepo Uribe said that this painting was previously unknown before being published in his catalogue raisonné on the artist.(1) In a report from 26 April 2017 that is available upon request, Professor Uribe dates this painting to De Vargas Figueroa's mature years when his oeuvre reached its highest quality.
