"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The panel has been cradled to consolidate and support two vertical joins; there is restoration down the joins to replace minor paint loss. Several unstable splits can be detected, down from the top edge and up from the bottom; these have correspondingly fragile paint along them. The gold ground has been restored in the upper left corner, through the halo and down the joins and where the red ground colour has come to dominate, this restoration is excessive covering more than the damage. Areas of the paint layer that are well preserved include all three figures and the foreground between the joins. Removal of the varnish will improve the tonality."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
Please note, Condition 11 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot.
