Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The copper plate is flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish slightly discoloured. There are no major damages visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small retouchings scattered around the upper and left margins, a band of 0.5 cm. along the lower margin, in the forms of the two flanking crucifixes, in the foreground at the base of the central cross, scattered in the sky, and in Christ's forehead. There are also pin-prick retouchings scattered in the Virgin's pale robe, and a more concentrated area of retouching in St John's red robe and to the landscape to his left. The painting is in overall good condition.
