Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The painting has a heavy relining, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small retouchings scattered throughout. More notable, concentrated areas include the centre and lower half of the left margin, in the central part of the foreground, and through the dark cloud, in the centre of the sky and centre right. There would appear to be pinprick retouchings scattered throughout the architecture, and an older campaign of retouching is visible slightly more clearly with the naked eye, throughout the sky - this would become more apparent with cleaning. The painting is in overall fair condition.

Cataloguing

Catalogue Note

A copy, later in date, of the original painting by Canaletto of 1726-27, today in the Royal Collection, Windsor (inv. no. RCIN 400668).1 That painting is one of a series of twelve views of the Grand Canal by Canaletto, which formed the basis for Visentini's series of engravings - most likely the inspiration for the present work.
