The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured but even. There are small losses to the paint surface in the two upper corners, which appear to have been caused by the canvas being rolled or folded in the past. There are also visible retouchings to further horizontal lines along the upper margin. Numerous small, retouched pinprick losses are visible throughout the saint's head and beard, and in the background around his head. A degree of wear is visible throughout the painting, particularly in the background, and visible, discoloured retouchings run along all four margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the presence of the aforementioned retouchings, and further reveals small retouchings throughout the saint's hands and open book, as well as in the dark folds of his cloak. The painting is in overall moderate condition.
