Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.
The painting is on canvas, which has been laid down on the panel, which shows the former extensive presence of woodworm - evident in the front of the painting only in one small hole, upper right. The paint surface is otherwise dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are numerous losses to the gold around the edges of the applied frame, as well as scattered in the gold background of the painting itself, and dotted through the figures. Inspection under ultraviolet light is hampered by the old varnish, and some of the pigments, in the decoration to both figures' robes, for example fluoresce darkly, but have not necessarily been subject to strengthening. Nevertheless there would appear to be small scattered retouchings in both figures, and to some of the aforementioned losses in the background. The painting is in overall moderate condition.
