Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas has a firm relining, rendering the paint surface relatively flat, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is some visible, discoloured retouching in the sky, notably to an old, diagonal scratch approx. 15 cm. long upper centre and to a repaired vertical tear centre right approx. 18 cm. long. There has been a slight knock to the reverse of the canvas which is visible in the form of a slight dent in the furthest left section of the sail on the left. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings, as well as revealing a few further spots scattered in the sky and sea, and a larger area in the sea just below the boat furthest right, measuring approx. 2 x 3 cm. In overall fair condition.
