Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The canvas is unlined. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured, uneven, and slightly dulled. Small spots of discoloured retouching are visible to the naked eye scattered in the curtain behind the sitter and in the green table cloth. Inspection under UV light is hindered by the uneven and opaque varnish. A small area of retouching is visible in the sitter's red ribbon of his collar (2 x 4 cm) and in the table below his hand (4 x 4 cm). Any older restoration is impossible to work out, but the painting would appear to be in overall good condition.
