Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The canvas has a very firm relining and has settled back against the stretcher with marks from the crossbar clearly visible on the surface. There is a very developed and visible network of craquelure throughout, creating an uneven texture. The paint surface is otherwise slightly dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Inspection under UV reveals retouching throughout with lines throughout the sitter's face, hair, hand, and cravatte to reduce appearance of craquelure. There are more concentrated areas of retouching around the silhouette of his hand, in some of the folds of the drapery, as well as in the background centre right and along the left margin. The painting is in overall moderate condition.
