Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The panel is flat with a cradle adhered to the reverse. There are two hairline cracks visible from the front, running vertically from the upper margin: the left-hand crack is approximately 15 cm in length running through her right eye; and the second crack is approximately 12 cm in length running from the other side of her head down to her ear. There is some quite pronounced craquelure, particularly at the edges throughout the varnish that seems to have blanched slightly. The paint surface in some areas is very thin, more a result of the sketch-like application of paint than wear. There are some old and new discoloured retouchings visible throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals very little: the varnish fluoresces opaque. In fair overall condition. Offered in a black frame with ripple mouldings and gilt sight edge in fair condition with a few chips and losses.
