Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The panel is formed of three vertical planks, which are supported on the reverse, each with two inset butterfly battens and additional rectangular blocks. There are shorter vertical splits either side of each join at the upper and lower margins (each approx 20 cm long) which are also supported by small rectangular blocks on the reverse. Vertical lines of slightly discoloured retouching are visible along all of these. The paint surface is otherwise slightly dirty and the varnish is very slightly discoloured. Inspection under UV light confirms these aforementioned retouchings and additionally reveals tiny retouchings throughout to the sitter's hair, a short diagonal scratch beside her nose (1 cm), a vertical scratch in her white collar (8 cm), and a vertical scratch in the centre of her black dress (approx 9 cm). Further small cosmetic retouchings are scattered sparsely in the background. Despite these, the painting reads well and is in overall fair condition.
