Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The bevelled panel is flat and stable. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish only slightly discoloured. There is frame abrasion visible along the upper left and lower margins. There is a very faint diagonal scratch across Christ's ankles which is visible under raking light, measuring approx. 12 cm.

Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching: scattered along all four margins; in the background upper left, notably to a Z shaped area, 2 x 5 x 2 cm.; in the background at the center right, notably to an 'n' shaped area, 2 x 2.5 x 2 cm.; scattered in the foreground and in the garments of the figures on the left; in the figure of Christ, most notably in his hair and in an area of his loincloth measuring 0.5 x 2 cm.; to two diagonal surface scratches at the center left, the longest approx. 10 cm.

None of the above impedes the legibility of the image and the painting is ready to hang with no further work necessary.
