Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The copper plate is adhered onto a wooden cradle. The paint surface has a discoloured old varnish. There are some losses at the margins, and some losses to the surface throughout as a result of lifting. There areas of lifting have not been consolidated - it would be beneficial to do so to avoid further losses. The existing losses (most notable in the Madonna's rose-coloured dress), though unrestored, do not deter from the overall charm of the image. The blue of the Madonna's mantle and the red of the infant Saint John's mantle have developed a distinct craquelure. The colours of the other pigments remain vibrant.

The varnish fluoresces opaque under ultra violet light but there appears to be very little existing intervention bar some retouching to an old scratch in the blue covering the Madonna's outstretched leg.

In overall fair condition but in need of stabilizing.

Offered in a large gesso and gilt wood frame with the usual chips and losses, and a more significant loss to the lower right corner.
