Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is a degree of wear visible throughout the canvas and numerous small discoloured retouchings visible throughout the sky and the ice, lower left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these to be the result of two campaigns of restoration, the more recent of which also comprises a network of retouching through the figures and buildings in the foreground, to disguise the appearance of craquelure. The painting is in overall fair condition, which would respond well to cleaning and the readdressing of the old retouchings.
