Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. A strong degree of wear is visible throughout the painting, which has resulted in several areas of loss, now evident through discoloured retouchings. These occur most notably in the upper right and left corners and along the upper margin; along the right-hand margin, including in the top of the Elder's head; and along the lower margin and in the leg of Susannah, as well as scattered to a more minor degree through her body. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and further reveals retouching to part of the face of the Elder on the left, scattered in the background between his head and Susannah's, as well as pinprick retouchings throughout his head and Susannah's face and body. The painting is in overall moderate condition.
