Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Numerous discoloured retouchings are visible throughout the flesh tones of all the figures. In raking light it is also possible to discern retouchings scattered throughout the background, largely confined to the margins, and in two more concentrated areas in the centre of the upper margin and upper left, each measuring approx. 2 by 2 cm. There are likewise a couple of more concentrated areas in the Madonna's sleeve. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all of these. The painting would be vastly improved with cleaning and attention to these discoloured retouchings, and is otherwise in overall fair condition.
