Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable, and bevelled along all four edges. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. There are vertical additions each measuring 0.6 cm to the left and right margins.

Inspection under UV reveals a thick opaque varnish. There are fine lines of retouching throughout to disguise the appearance of the woodgrain, most notably in the flesh tones of the angel and Christ. The painting is in overall good condition.
