Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The panel is flat and stable. It is uncradled and constructed of two horizontally joined planks. There are three butterfly support blocks adhered to the join on the reverse.

The paint surface has an even and clear but very thick and shiny varnish. There is some minor frame abrasion at the margins and a few surface scuffs and scratches throughout. There are visible discoloured retouchings along the panel join that are visible to the naked eye. There is a surface crack 3cm long running vertically from the upper left margin, and a surface scratch measuring 3cm to the base of Catherine's spiked wheel.

Some pigments used by the artist in the darker blue used in the shadows of the Saint's cloak, and pigments used in the dark tones of the background, have aged less well and have somewhat 'corrupted' resulting in a change in colour and a distinctive pattern of craquelure. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings along the join but reveals very little additional restoration bar a few very minor scattered retouchings.

In fair overall condition.

Offered in a carved wood and gesso gilt frame in good condition.
