Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The single oak panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is discolored. In raking light, it is possible to discern small retouchings to old restored losses scattered in the sky, in parts of the foreground, and in sailing boat's sail and stern. These are confirmed by inspection under ultraviolet light. These do not distract from the legibility of the image. The painting is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

Abraham Susenier worked in Dordrecht, where he joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1646. The tonal quality, limited palette and application of paint in the present, highly atmospheric work clearly reflect the debt that many of Susenier's landscapes owe to Jan van Goyen, one of the most influential landscape painters of the 17th century.
