Description

STEFANO TOFANELLI

Nave di Lucca 1752 - 1812 Rome

HEAD OF A PILGRIM SAINT

oil on canvas

surface: 18¾ by 14⅛ in.; 47.6 by 35.9 cm.

wooden support: 19½ by 14¾ in.; 49.5 by 37.5 cm.

Acquired in Florence in 1885 (according to inscription on reverse).

Born in Lucca, Tofanelli started his career in Rome where he achieved great renown for his Neoclassical portraits. Aside from portraits, Tofanelli also painted refined religious works like his frescoes from 1794 in the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate, Tivoli.

We are grateful to Professor Giancarlo Sestieri for suggesting an attribution to Stefano Tofanelli on the basis of photographs.
