ENGLISH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1800
SAILING SHIPS IN CALM WATER
oil on canvas
canvas: 28 by 37⅛ in.; 71.1 by 94.3 cm.
framed: 31¼ by 40⅝ in.; 79.4 by 103.2 cm.
The canvas is wax lined and appears slight pressed as a result. Image reads well despite its dirty surface. A minor horizontal scratch is in the cloud at center right, which is barely visible. Two vertical lines of strengthening run vertically for about 5 in. at top right. A discolored dot of retouching, likely addressing an old loss, is at center left in the cloud. Spots of retouching that have discolored are scattered throughout. Inspection under UV reveals areas of repair here and there, like in the top cloud at center and in the sky at bottom left. Further reading is impeded due to its varnish. Offered framed.
