CIRCLE OF GEORGE GOWER

PORTRAIT OF A LADY, HALF-LENGTH, IN AN ELABORATE DRESS AND COLLAR

oil on panel

panel: 29 by 25 in.; 73.7 by 63.5 cm.

frame: 31 by 26¾ in.; 78.7 by 68 cm.

Condition Report

The panel consists of at least three boards, with one of the joins strengthened on the reverse with battens. The largest middle board has two thin vertical scratches that have been retouched and stabilized on the reverse with battens. The surface of the painting reads well, and some of the original impasto is preserved in certain parts, like in the jewels. Some minor dots of loss are scattered on the bottom edge in the sitter's gown, with a small spot of minor flaking above. A discolored dot, which likely addressed an old loss, is visible in the dress, at center below the brooch. Inspection under UV reveals a thick varnish, though there appears to be a few campaigns of retouching. The newer campaign consists of a thin line of inpainting that runs for about 5 in. at bottom right and very few scattered dots of retouching on the black parts of the dress at right. We would suggest a restorer addresses the few dots of loss and minor flaking at bottom right, but the work can otherwise hang as is. Offered in a wooden frame with an inner gold liner.
