The Flemish painter Matthijs Schoevaerdts drew inspiration from the works of Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder. Although details from his life are obscured, Schoevaerdts was admitted in 1690 to Guild of Saint Luke in Brussels, where he served as dean from 1692-1696. This lively landscape filled with individualized figure groups, each rendered with the utmost attention to detail, is characteristic of Schoevaerdts's works. He had a fruitful career and his works were widely collected throughout the 18th century.
