The Property of a Gentleman
Rotterdam 1619 - 1693 Amsterdam
Barn interior with an old woman and still life of vegetables
signed and dated upper left: KALF 1644·
oil on copper
16.5 x 13.9 cm.; 6½ x 5½ in.
The copper plate is flat and stable with a minor knock in the upper left corner, and some slight unevenness along the left margin. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The areas of impasto brushwork in the flames of the fire and the vegetable still life remain intact. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a small area of retouching to the aforementioned knock measuring 1 x 1 cm. in the upper left corner, and a similarly sized area of retouching in the lower right corner. Other small retouchings are scattered along the left and upper margins, as well as to a spot in the arm of the woman entering the cottage. There are also a couple of pin-prick retouchings in the face and arm of the seated woman and in the cabbage she holds, as well as the leafy vegetable in the foreground. In overall fairly good condition.
