Property from a Spanish Private Collection
STUDIO OF PAUL DE VOS
Hulst 1591/2 or 1595 - 1678 Antwerp
Concert of Birds
oil on canvas
146 x 245.3 cm.; 57½ x 96½ in.
The canvas has an old and effective relining. The original size of the canvas appears to be smaller (closer to the birds) – approx. 102 x 180 cm. The seams along these edges are visible and the associated retouching has discoloured. The canvas appears to have been extended to its present size either at the time of the painting's creation or only marginally afterwards. There are some losses as a result of flaking (all visible in the catalogue illustration): in the old seam on the left, in the sky just above the parrot's head on the right, and in the old seam on the right. There is an old damage with some paint loss in the trunk at the left and just extending into the head of the down-facing parrot, which is the result of a knock from the reverse. Larger areas of restoration are visible to the naked eye along the aforementioned seams, as well as some patches of localised restoration in the sky. All these have discoloured with age. The varnish throughout the painting is very dirty and has dulled with time. There is some flaking in the sky above the central parrot that will require consolidating. The original brushwork and colours are in good condition. Inspection under UV light reveals strengthening in the dark tones of the trunk lower right, and a restored damage approx. 2 x 4 inches at the lower left margin.
