Condition Report

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are two, very small, minor surface scratches along the centre of the lower margin, and the dark ground has become slightly more visible through some areas of the sky. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small retouchings scattered in the sky, most notably in the upper corners. The rest of the composition remains largely untouched, save for some small, scattered retouchings and a more concentrated area in the bank, lower left, and to a short, horizontal surface scratch above the buildings, centre right, 9 cm. long. The painting is in overall fairly good condition.

Catalogue Note

Vanvitelli painted this view in at least four versions, notably the painting of 1711 held in the Accademia di San Luca, Rome,1 all of which vary in format, staffage and details. There is also a related drawing, though not a preparatory study (since the viewpoint is at a more oblique angle), held in the Palazzo Reale, Caserta.2
