FRANCESCO DA PONTE, IL GIOVANE CALLED BASSANO

Bassano del Grappa circa 1549 - 1592 Venice

The Adoration of the Shepherds

bears signature lower right: GIACOMO. BASSANO. F. MDLXI

oil on canvas

159.8 x 139.7 cm.; 62⅞ x 55 in.

We are grateful to Professor Alessandro Ballarin for endorsing the attribution to Francesco Bassano following inspection of images, and for dating the work to the 1580s, when the artist was working in Venice. The painting is closely related to one of Francesco's finest and most famous works, the signed Nativity altarpiece he painted for the church of Il Redentore on the Giudecca, Venice.1
