Condition Report

The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is clean with a clear varnish. There is a pin-prick loss in the satchel of the boy in the lower right corner. Some of the darker pigments show evidence of slight wear. There is visible retouching along a vertical seam which runs the height of the canvas a third of the way in from the right margin. This is confirmed under ultraviolet light. Further fine lines of retouchings are revealed in the worn areas, as well as spots scattered throughout, notably in the shadows of the angels' robes upper centre, to a handful of scratches along the right margin, and to a repaired tear below the plate of eggs approx. 2 inches long. In overall fair condition for a canvas of this size. Offered in a carved and plaster gilt frame with some losses.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Professor Alessandro Ballarin for endorsing the attribution to Francesco Bassano following inspection of images, and for dating the work to the 1580s, when the artist was working in Venice. The painting is closely related to one of Francesco's finest and most famous works, the signed Nativity altarpiece he painted for the church of Il Redentore on the Giudecca, Venice.1
