Condition Report

Portrait of a man:

The panel is formed of 3 vertical planks supported on the reverse with a single horizontal batten and two vertical strips of canvas. A second horizontal batten appears to have been removed in the past. The joins of the panel are visible from the front and the panel itself is slightly bowed. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is a slight degree of wear visible particularly in the white of his ruff and cuffs. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals bands of retouching along both vertical joins, small spots of retouching scattered in the background, and to a more concentrated area in the upper right corner measuring 2 x 8 cm. There are some very fine lines of retouching to disguise the appearance of craquelure in the left of the sitter’s forehead, his ear and to a handful of very small spots in his cheek and around his ruff. There are a handful of small retouchings scattered in his coat, notably in his proper left sleeve to some more concentrated patches (the larger of which measures 3 x 5 cm.). His proper right hand and cuff are extensively retouched with small patchings. There is also retouching visible along the lower margin.

Portrait of a lady:

The panel is formed of 3 vertical planks supported on the reverse with three horizontal battens and four vertical strips of canvas. The joins of the panel are visible from the front and the panel itself is slightly bowed. A repaired vertical split running the height of the panel with associated retouching is also visible approx. 3 cm. in from the left margin. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is a slight degree of wear visible particularly in the white of her ruff and cuffs. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals bands of retouching along both vertical joins as well as confirming those along the aforementioned split. It also reveals small spots of retouching scattered in the background, and to a few in her dress, with a handful of more concentrated areas in both her sleeves as well as to the right of her proper right hand. There are some very fine lines of retouching to disguise the appearance of craquelure in the sitter’s forehead, proper left cheek, and both hands. There is also retouching scattered along all four margins.
