FOLLOWER OF LEONARDO DA VINCI, 19TH CENTURY
oil on oak panel
74 x 52.5 cm.; 29⅛ x 20⅝ in.
The panel is uncradled and there is a vertical split running the height of the panel, around a third from the left-hand margin; there is also a short vertical split running down from the upper margin, a third from the right-hand margin, measuring approx. 10cm. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Bitumenisation, with associated retouching, is visible throughout most of the darker areas of the painting, in the figure's dress, hair and in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the old varnish, but confirms the aforementioned retouching to the craquelure and further reveals an area of retouching to the short 10cm. split. There may also be some old retouching in the sitter's folded hands, but it is difficult to discern more beneath the opaque varnish. In overall moderate condition.
