Venice 1802 - 1870
Venice, a view of the Riva degli Schiavoni looking East
signed lower right: C. Grubacs
and bears second signature lower right: C. Grubacs
oil on canvas, unlined
21 x 27 cm.; 8¼ x 10⅝ in.
The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and even. Faint stretcher marks are visible along all four margins under raking light. There are two tiny visible spots of restoration in the pavement, just above the centre of the lower margin, as well as a larger spot above the skyline, lower right (1 x 1 cm.), and some minor scattered, visible retouching along all four margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and reveals a handful of further small spots scattered in the sky, and some retouching in the corner of the Doge's Palace and in some of the shadows of the arched windows. There are a few tiny strengthenings scattered in the figures and the dog in the foreground. None of these detracts from the legibility of the image, however, and the painting is in overall very good condition.
