SOUTHERN NETHERLANDISH, MALINES, EARLY 16TH CENTURY
VIRGIN AND CHILD
gilt and polychromed walnut
marked for Malines to the reverse
Overall, the condition of the wood is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, including to the back at the centre and to the base at the front. This has led to some minor losses, in particular to the edges of the base, to the Virgin's proper left foot and to the Virgin's headdress at the back. There is non-active worming in areas, including to the base on the proper right side. The Child's nose has been reattached. There is wear to the gilding and polychromy throughout, including some losses and flaking, and the polychromy is likely to have been partially refreshed. There is a later metal pin to the underside of the base, the underside is slightly uneven.
