ITALIAN OR FRENCH, LATE 18TH/ EARLY 19TH CENTURY
AFTER THE ANTIQUE
LAOCOON AND HIS SONS
bronze, with a velvet covered base
bronze: 29.5 by 25cm., 11⅝ by 9⅞in.
base: 5.5 by 27.5cm., 2¼ by 10⅞in.
Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The son on the right hand side is cast separately and a slightly open joint is visible at three coils of the serpent. This section is slightly loose but stable. A few further casting joints are very slightly visible. There are also a few original casting plugs. There are several minor nicks and scratches, and more notable scratching to the back of the integral base. There is also some glue residue to the base. There is some residue to the snake above Laocoon's proper right hand. There is minor rubbing to the patina at the high points. The integral base is very slightly warped in areas.
There is extensive wear to the velvet of the base, which is not attached to the bronze.
