CIRCLE OF ANDREA DEL VERROCCHIO (1435-1488), ITALIAN, FLORENCE, 15TH CENTURY | HEAD OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
Estimate: 10,000 - 15,000 GBP
CIRCLE OF ANDREA DEL VERROCCHIO (1435-1488)
ITALIAN, FLORENCE, 15TH CENTURY
HEAD OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
24 by 20cm., 9½ by 7⅞in.
The head is roughly finished at the neck and the hair appears cut off at the bottom. This suggests that it is either a fragment from a larger sculpture or perhaps a sculptor's model. Otherwise the condition is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There appears to be some wellconcealed restoration to the forked beard. There is an original hole to the back of the head. There is a very minor hairline firing crack at the back of the head on the proper right side. There are a few minor scratches and abrasions, notably to the tip of the nose. There is a minor indented line around the head, particularly visible on the proper left side, which appears to have occurred when the clay was unfired. The base is in good condition with minor wear, including a few chips. Glue residue is visible at the joints.
