FRENCH, LATE 16TH CENTURY
CHRIST FROM AN ENTOMBMENT
30 by 128cm., 11¾ by 50⅜in.
The wood is carved in sections and open joints are visible to Christ’s proper right side running from his forearm to the edge at the feet, to the tops of both feet, and to the proper left arm and hand. There is stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, in particular to Christ’s torso and legs. There is wear to the polychromy throughout, including losses and flaking. There is a minor loss to the tip of the nose. There is minor evidence of past worming, in particular to the underside. Otherwise the condition is stable, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age.
