bronze, on a serpentine marble base

bronze: 18.2cm., 7⅛in.

base: 5cm., 2in.

Condition Report

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The proper left hand would probably have supported a now-lost attribute. There is wear to the lacquer patina, notably rubbing at the high points and some flaking. The proper right knee is flat at the bottom, with a metal dowel for insertion into a base. The proper left hoof and ankle hair are also flattened at the bottom, and there is some sealant residue to the underside of the proper left hoof. There are a few minor original casting flaws, including around the proper right lower leg, where there is also a lacuna. A small casting patch at the proper left knee. There are several small nicks and scratches, and more notably some dents to the lower back on the proper left side.

The marble base is a fragment with losses at the sides and chips throughout. The bronze is currently not fixed to the base.

Provenance

Robert Rudolf Theodor Mayer (1874-1974), Vienna;

thence by descent to the present owner

Catalogue Note

The present bronze forms a mirror-image of Severo da Ravenna's famous Kneeling Satyr, which was cast by his workshop in numerous variants. Riccio's and Severo's models were adapted freely by later Paduan bronze founders, primarily for utilitarian objects. The rather soft modelling of the present figure's face and anatomy suggests such a later dating.
