Our knowledge of both the topography and the daily life of many Dutch cities, towns and villages during the middle part of the 18th century is to a considerable extent due to the artistic efforts of the three La Fargue brothers, Paulus Constantijn (1729-1782), Jacob Elias (1735-after 1778) and Karel (1738-1793). (See also lot 103.)
Here, we see the Zuid-West-Binnensingel of The Hague, looking from the north, with Delft in the distance. As Charles Dumas has kindly informed us, when it was in the Van Slingeland collection, the drawing had a pendant, a view of the Prinsessegracht in The Hague, which was lot A 10 in the 1785 sale. We are also most grateful to him for providing us with the early provenance of the present work.
Like many topographical drawings of its time, this watercolor provided the basis for a print, made by Pierre Fouquet, Junior.
