These vibrant and freely executed studies in red and white chalk are preparatory for Volterrano's ceiling painting of The Assumption of the Virgin, executed in 1670 for the central section of the nave of the church of SS. Annunziata, Florence. Other studies related to the same figure in the left foreground of the painting have also survived.1
