The Battle of the Saints was a significant naval battle in the Caribbean between the British and the French that took place, during the American Revolutionary War, between 9th and 12th April 1782.

This work depicts the decisive action when Admiral Sir George Rodney flagship ‘Formidable’ broke through the French line.

Joseph Yorke had joined the British navy aged eleven and he served, as a junior officer, on the Formidable during the battle. He was knighted by George III in 1805 and rose to the rank of 'Admiral of the Blue' in 1830.
